FUNGUS FESTIVAL SEPT 3-6, 2009

The Cordova Fungus Festival will take place from September 3-6, 2009. There will be workshops, forays, gourmet dining, and experts from the world of mushrooms. Especially those crazy Cordova Fungus Pluckers.

Festival Sponsors: US Forest Service, PWS Science Center, Cordova Fungus Pluckers, Alaska Sea Grant, Copper River Watershed Project and the Cordova Chamber of Commerce.

Fungus Festival Schedule- $$ indicates a cost is involved

Patrick Hamilton (aka the Mycochef)
Will be the guest chef for the Fungus Feast this year.
Patrick is the regular cook for the Sonoma County Mycological Association annual SOMA camp event.  He is a trained chef from the California Culinary Academy that has cooked professionally for over ten years and has written over 100 articles on the cooking of Fungi.

Karen Casselman
The author of "Lichen Dyes: The New Source Book" and the foremost expert on lichen dyeing in North America will be conducting a workshop using local lichens to dye wool and silk.

Dr. Steve Trudell
The author of the new mushroom ID book "Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest" will be ID'ing mushrooms and presenting a program on mushroom identification.

Dr. Lawrence Millman
Will be presenting on ethnomycology, or the use of mushrooms in societies. Lawrence has been travelling extensively in the Artic and will focus on the native uses of mushrooms from tobacco to wound dressing.
He is the author of eleven books, including Our Like Will Not Be There Again, Northern Latitudes, Last Places, An Evening Among Headhunters, A Kayak Full of Ghosts, and Lost in the Arctic. His work has also appeared in Smithsonian, National Geographic Adventure, the Atlantic Monthly, Sports Illustrated, and Islands. He has won numerous awards, including a Northern Lights Award, a Lowell Thomas Award, an award for the best article on Canada in a U.K. publication (1996), and a Pacific- Asia Gold Travel Award; he has been anthologized in the Best American Travel Writing (Houghton Mifflin) three years in a row.
Millman holds a Ph.D. in Literature from Rutgers University. A fellow of the prestigious Explorers Club, he has made over 30 trips to the Arctic and Subarctic. He has discovered a previously unknown lake in Borneo, and there is a mountain named after him outside Tasiilaq in eastern Greenland.

This schedule is a work in progress and additional information will be added as it is available.

Many local resturaunts will be offering specials during Festival and we will post them as we get them.To register for a workshop you can contact the Cordova Chamber of Commerce at 907 424-7260 on or after August 4th. FungiFeast dinner tickets will go on sale at the Chamber on Friday, August 14th. There is a limit of 4 per customer and you have to get them in person. These go fast and are limited, sorry, no reservations in advance and no exceptions.

 
Incoming guests who are members or Alaskan mushroom clubs or members of mycological societies are eligible for free housing assistance. Please contact Debbie Collins at 907 424-5272 and she will get you set up. All others please contact the Cordova Chamber of Commerce for assistance with accomodations. Remember that the Festival happens during our very popular Silver salmon fishing season and accomodations can get scarce. Please plan in advance!
